CROWN MORPHOMETRY FOR TWO VALUABLE TIMBER SPECIES FROM MIOMBO WOODLAND IN MOZAMBIQUE

نویسندگان

چکیده

Pterocarpus angolensis DC and Bobgunnia madagascariensis (Desv.) J. H. Kirkbr. & Wiersema are two hardwood species found in Miombo woodland. Crown size, being closely related to the photosynthetic capacity of a tree, is an important parameter studies growth individual trees. In this sense, present study aimed morphometric relationships P. B. as resource describe features these species. Data were sampled 60 rectangular plots 20 x 50 m, systematically distributed within forest. each plot, diameter at breast height (DBH), (h), crown insertion point (cih) four radii all trees with DBH ≥ 10 cm measured. Results indicated that length grow increase, larger crown, greater dimensions; for madagascariensis, have shown low correlation when considering DBH. It was concluded influence on tree measures description planning silvicultural activities be performed natural forests. The results interest forest managers since they make decisions about operations. Keywords: prediction models; umbila; pau-ferro; management.

Economic Shocks and Miombo Woodland Resource Use: A household level study in Mozambique

Quantitative analysis of household use of miombo resources is limited, and detailed accounts of a full range of environmental resources are scanty. The present manuscript aims to (a) quantify the contribution of miombo woodlands to the household economy; (b) assess the role of miombo woodlands as safety nets in the face of household level economic shocks; and (c) identify the socio-economic det...

Tree communities and structural dynamics in miombo (Brachystegia–Julbernardia) woodland, Tanzania

Tree vegetation and size structure was sampled in a miombo woodland area in E Tanzania and related to environmental factors, particularly soil and disturbance history. A total of 86 tree species was found. Four plant communities were distinguished through multivariate classification. Community 1 was dominated by Brachystegia boehmii, Brachystegia bussei and Julbernardia globiflora, and communit...

Mapping Woodland Cover in the Miombo Ecosystem: A Comparison of Machine Learning Classifiers

Miombo woodlands in Southern Africa are experiencing accelerated changes due to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. In order to formulate sustainable woodland management strategies in the Miombo ecosystem, timely and up-to-date land cover information is required. Recent advances in remote sensing technology have improved land cover mapping in tropical evergreen ecosystems. However, woodland...

How does fire intensity and frequency affect miombo woodland tree populations and biomass?

Miombo woodlands are the largest savanna in the world and dominate southern Africa. They are strongly influenced by anthropogenic fires and support the livelihoods of over 100 million people. Managing the fire regime of these flammable systems is difficult, but crucial for sustaining biodiversity, ecosystem services, and carbon stocks. Fire intensity is more easily manipulated than fire frequen...
